I must tell you all about a fantastic book I have just bought, which is an absolute treasure trove of information for anybody interested in horror pulp paperbacks. The book is called Paperbacks From Hell: The Twisted History of 70s and 80s Horror Fiction, and is by Grady Hendrix.
Believe me, if, as I do, you have a great love for all those wonderfully garish horror novels that were so popular back in the 70s and 80s, and you want to wallow in the nostalgia of going into your local bookstore and being absolutely HOOKED by the covers of these colourful classics, then you certainly won’t be disappointed with this masterpiece of a book.
As well as being absolutely jam-packed with many photos and illustrations of 70s and 80s horror novels, the book also breaks down into chapters, each covering a particular aspect of the genre, be it vampire, animals on the rampage, or possessed kids. Each chapter is well-written and highly informative, and you get a real feeling that the author certainly knows his stuff, and that he writes with a keen enthusiasm for his subject.
This book is, without doubt, the BEST one I have ever read on the history of pulp horror paperbacks, and if you grew up reading all these classic works, then you will certainly adore this fantastic trip down memory lane, when horror fiction was BOOMING all over the bookshops. Well done, Mr Grady Hendrix, for giving all us horror fans a truly beautiful and highly entertaining book that we shall treasure forever.
