If you are a horror fan, you will probably be familiar with the new James Wan movie The Curse of La Llorona. But did you know that this film is based on an actual legend, namely “The Curse of the Crying Woman”?
Steeped in Mexican folklore, the story goes that long ago, a woman called Maria married a wealthy man. She eventually bore two children to her husband. Unfortunately, their marriage started to grow sour. Her husband began to spend more and more time away from home. Also, he paid more attention to their two children than he did to his wife.
As their marital ties grew increasingly distant, Maria was devastated to one day catch her husband with another woman. In a fit of mindless rage, she drowned her two children. However, realising the horror of what she had done, she quickly regretted it.
Maria is said to have drowned herself shortly afterwards. But when she got to Heaven’s gates, she was not admitted on account of her having taken the three lives. Consequently, she was banished to Purgatory on Earth until she could find her lost children.
It is said that Maria’s lost spirit can be heard sobbing in the dead of night as she mournfully wanders the earth in her eternal search for her children. This is where the term “The Weeping Woman” comes from. Some versions of the legend say that Maria even attacks kids or cheating husbands, and in the most horrific fashion. Thus it’s not surprising that the story has provided some tasty material for horror movie producers!
The Curse of La Llorona, or “The Weeping Woman”, has terrified generation after generation of Mexican children.
